The next morning, Wes flew home and Eric and I walked back to Amsterdam Centraal. Here is an obelisk in the middle of the Dam.
img_2126.jpg
And some more buildings on the Dam.
img_2127.jpg
We got on an Express train to Berlin. Eric got out his laptop and worked on his thesis, which was due three days after we got back.
img_2128.jpg
We got off at this station in downtown Berlin, so named because it is near the Zoo.
img_2129.jpg
The train and the station, right after we arrived.

The train station from the street nearby.
img_2131.jpg
And a view of some of the nearby downtown.

Walking from the train station.
img_2133.jpg
This church was bombed out during World War II and left as it was.
img_2134.jpg
Another look at the church. It stands in the center of a large square near the Europa Center and the main shopping district in former West Berlin.

A shopping area on Kurfurstendamm, the main shopping street in Berlin.
img_2139.jpg
And KaDeWe, the largest department store in Europe.
img_2140.jpg
We walked toward the Tiergarten. Much of Berlin was under heavy construction, as it has been since the Wall came down.

A river near the Tiergarten in Berlin.
img_2142.jpg
We wandered through part of the government district. I think this was the Mexican embassy.
img_2143.jpg
A dim view down a park path in the Tiergarten.
img_2144.jpg
Victory Column in the center of the Tiergarten.
img_2145.jpg
The Column is surrounded by a huge traffic circle.
img_2146.jpg
A random statue in the Tiergarten, which is full of all sorts of statues.
img_2147.jpg
Like this one.
img_2148.jpg
Near by, there was a bagpipe rehearsal going on.
img_2149.jpg
A modern-looking, very large Mercedes-Benz dealership near Strasse des 17 Juni at the edge of the Tiergarten.
img_2150.jpg
A technical university of some sort!
img_2151.jpg
We wandered around the campus briefly. Here is the library, I think. After that, we went to our hotel, near the square with the church.
img_2152.jpg
The next day we got up early to explore Berlin. We took the metro toward former East Berlin, switching trains at this station.
img_2153.jpg
We got out at Potsdamer Platz, near which there were these new buildings.
img_2154.jpg
The train station entrance/exit.
img_2155.jpg
The Berlin Wall used to run right through here. Now it is a hypermodern downtown area, complete with IMAX theater.
img_2156.jpg
An intersection at Potsdamer Platz. We walked toward the Brandenburg Gate.
img_2157.jpg
There was this large balloon, which we later saw flying around.
img_2158.jpg
A memorial, under construction, to Jews killed during World War II.
img_2159.jpg
Another look at the memorial.

Approaching the Brandenburg Gate, with the Reichstag (German Parliament) in the background on the left.
img_2161.jpg
A look up at the Brandenburg Gate, from the west side.
img_2162.jpg
And again.
img_2163.jpg
And a view from farther back.
img_2164.jpg
A look at the plaza on the east side of the Gate, and Unter den Linden Strasse behind it.
