A dim view inside the cathedral. There was an organ audition going on, which really added to the ambience.
img_2246.jpg
Toward the pulpit. It looks big in this picture, but there was actually more behind us than in front of us!
img_2247.jpg
Candles in the cathedral.
img_2248.jpg
Back outside, another view of the front of the cathedral, which was under construction, like pretty much everything in Germany.
img_2249.jpg
A look at the entrances of the cathedral, and people milling about in the square.
img_2250.jpg
We then headed off on a walking tour of Cologne. Here's an old Roman tower, a few minutes from the cathedral.
img_2251.jpg
Another, less impressive old church in Cologne. There were lots of them.
img_2252.jpg
Including this one.
img_2253.jpg
There were also trams in Cologne, but we didn't use them.
img_2254.jpg
A street full of people in the busy shopping district.
img_2255.jpg
Another view of the shopping district.
img_2256.jpg
Another old church, which looks like it may have been damaged in the war.
img_2257.jpg
And another one, under construction of course.
img_2258.jpg
We headed back toward the main cathedral, sent some email, and then it started raining.
img_2259.jpg
An ominous look at the cathedral during the big thunderstorm.
img_2260.jpg
Once the rain let up, we walked off again, this time along the Rhein.
img_2262.jpg
A blurry look back toward the cathedral (left) and another church along the bank of the Rhein.
img_2263.jpg
A large portion of the preserved medieval city wall.
img_2264.jpg
Another church in Cologne, in the mid evening. After that, it became too dark for photographs. We walked around some more and returned to the hotel.
img_2265.jpg
The next day we got on another Express train, to Paris. This wasn't the train, but ours was similar.
img_2266.jpg
Several hours later, we arrived at Paris Nord station, seen here.
img_2267.jpg
We stayed on the trains a little longer though, taking the metro to this station, under the Arc de Triomphe.
img_2268.jpg
The first thing we saw once we got off the train in Paris.
img_2269.jpg
We emerged from the metro station onto the Champs Elysees.
img_2270.jpg
Another look at the Arc. We didn't stay long, since we knew we'd be back later.
img_2271.jpg
Instead, we found and booked a hotel. Here it is: Hotel Familia on the Left Bank, about three minute's walk from Notre Dame.
img_2272.jpg
And then, back out into Paris. Here, a view down Boulevard Saint-Germain, near our hotel.
img_2273.jpg
The first thing we encountered was Notre Dame.
img_2274.jpg
In front of the cathedral was this medium-sized plaza.
img_2275.jpg
The front of Notre Dame.
img_2276.jpg
A look at the entrances to the cathedral, and people milling about.
img_2277.jpg
Detail above the entrance to Notre Dame.
img_2278.jpg
Inside the cathedral, a picture of one of the huge circular stained glass windows.
img_2279.jpg
Afterward, we headed up toward the tip of the island on which Notre Dame is built. Here's another building on the island.
img_2280.jpg
A view over one of the bridges from the island.
img_2281.jpg
At the tip of the island is this nice little park.
img_2282.jpg
People lounging around at the very tip of the island.
img_2283.jpg
A look at the Seine river and the Eiffel Tower in the distance, from the Right Bank.
img_2284.jpg
Next we came across the Louvre.
img_2285.jpg
The Louvre is huge. More on that later.
