The first dinner item! Everything we had to eat at the conference was stupendous. |
The main course, steak. Every meal was at least three courses. |
Super-tasty dessert, which was some sort of fruity mousse. |
After dinner, Eric and I walked around a bit. There was a palm tree sort of thing in the courtyard in front of the mansion. |
A view of the moat from behind the mansion. |
A blurry look at some swans enjoying the moat. |
After the conference ended, Eric and I got ready to leave Zeist. Here's a picture of the main street (I think) during the daytime. |
We took a train to Utrecht, a larger city nearby. They like bikes in the Netherlands. |
Here is a large building in Utrecht. I don't know if it is important in any way. |
A more complete view. There was a flying saucer like thing on top of the building. |
Nearby, there was also this strange sculpture, which I interpreted to be a giant leg and foot of some sort. |
 Some apartments in Utrecht. |
A river or canal in Utrecht. Most of the Dutch cities we visited had a lot of canals. |
A typically European residential street in Utrecht. |
And another canal in Utrecht. |
I love SmartCars. They were even more prevalent in Europe this time; last time we only saw a few, but this time they were all over. |
The large church tower in Utrecht. |
Another moderately important looking building in Utrecht. |
People and bikes in a sort of shopping district in downtown Utrecht. |
Yet another canal in Utrecht, with cafes lining the banks. |
More people walking and riding their bikes in Utrecht. Every Dutch city has bike lanes separate from the sidewalks. |
And that is because there are a lot of bikes. In fact, there are more bikes in the Netherlands than people. |
Inside the train station in Utrecht. |
We went to Delft, less than an hour away. Eric will be going to TU Delft for his PhD. |
A church in Delft, from a bridge over a canal. |
There is a historic square in the middle of Delft, which is dominated by this massive clock tower/cathedral. |
Another view of the square and tower. It played some nice tunes with its bells, one for over an hour while we ate dinner. |
Opposite the tower is this building, which is somehow related to the royal family. |
More of the square in Delft. We spent the night in a hotel on the square, though it isn't pictured here. |
And more, with my hand in the picture blocking out the sun. |
We ate dinner right in the square too. The menu had this picture of one of the princes and his wife, who were married in the square. |
Eric at dinner, with the tower behind him, probably playing a tune with its bells. |
Another church we encountered while wandering in Delft. |
 A street in Delft. |
And another street, running next to a canal. People parallel-parked right next to the canal, with no railing. I'm not that skilled. |
A strange sculpture behind a building near the main square. |
A view from our hotel room window the next morning. It was quiet in the square. |
We walked over to TU Delft. Here is the first university building we encountered. |
 Another university building. |
Some more modern TU Delft buildings. |
